Before we talk about insurance, let's make sure we understand what long-term care is. In its simplest terms, it's helping people live independently and as safely as possible wherever they call home. It's also helping with everyday activities, also known as activities of daily living.
I have some examples of activities of daily living listed here, such as bathing, dressing, grooming, using the toilet, eating, and moving around. Just as a side note, in this presentation, when I speak of activities of daily living or ADLs, I'm going to be referring primarily to what long-term care insurance companies describe as ADLs. Certainly, if you were to Google "activities of daily living," you would find definitions for instrumental activities of daily living and basic activities of daily living.
So in this presentation, we will lean more to the basic activities of daily living, which are more in line with what's recognized by the long-term care insurance companies. This is going to become an important distinction when we talk about whether or not it's appropriate to activate a claim with your insurance company.
There are two types of long-term care. One is home-based, and two is community-based, which we will dive into a little more here in a few moments. Thank you for watching this video.
