[Jonathan] Hello, everyone. My name is Jonathan Marsh. I'm the owner of Home Helpers Home Care of Bradenton. And in April National Occupational Therapy Month, we are stressing the need for occupational therapy, especially for those that are being discharged from a facility and going home. Today, I have the pleasure of meeting Sarah with Surrey Place. She is an occupational therapist, and we're going to ask her a couple of questions. So thank you, Sarah, for joining me today. And the first question I have for you is how does occupational therapy enhances someone's life.
[Sarah] In a setting like this, where we have patients coming from the hospital, we want to gear them up to go home and be independent. So while you're here with us, we want to do everything we can to get you back to the things that you love. A lot of times coming straight from the hospital with this age group and clientele, a lot of times we start with basic things such as walking, getting in and out of the shower or brushing our own teeth. So from a perspective of enhancement, a lot of times it's just really gaining a piece of your independence back so that when you do go home and you have home health services and you have family coming in, you're then able to move a step forward and get back to more of the things you love. After learning some of the basic adaptations and skills that we can train while you're here to help conserve energy in different aspects of life in order to be independent again.
[Jonathan] So tell me, how do you work as an interdisciplinary team here at Surrey Place to ensure a person is ready to go home?
[Sarah] So we like to come together as often as possible and as needed. A lot of times people who come here might need more than two hands to really get them up and get them moving. When we come in as the point of view or the point of view or the speech and sometimes even the nurses' point of view, it's really important for us to come together and make different observations and make different goals for our patients. Because somebody might be coming in with the inability to walk or the inability to even move their body out of the bed, they might need the nurse to look at a wound. They might need the physical therapist to figure out which muscle is causing the most weakness, and then they'll need the O.T. to come in and really kind of remind them like, this is what we're here for, this is what we need to do. And kind of helps point out the different aspects of a person's life as a person, meaning and then a person's purpose to understand that, no, this isn't an ideal situation. I don't want to be here. However, if I want to get back to some level of independence, some bit of quality of life, we kind of have to start with the basic building blocks to move forward.
[Jonathan] Perfect. All right. Well, thank you so much, Sarah. I really appreciate it. And I think you've educated our audience a lot on occupational therapy and skilled nursing facilities and how you all work together. If you have any questions, I would definitely reach out to Sarah or someone here at Surrey Place. It's a great facility. We've had many clients come here for their rehabilitation before they are discharged and go home. Thank you once again. And everyone make sure you hug an occupational therapist this month. Thank you.
