Aging Well Begins with Senior Health and Fitness

I love springtime and being able to get outdoors for fresh air, sunshine, exercise, and recreation! I am also very grateful to have my senior Mom nearby so we can spend more time together shopping, dining, and collectively working on our health and fitness.

The topic of senior health and fitness is so important to promoting the overall wellness of older adults. Seniors who understand the benefits of proper nutrition and regular exercise typically live longer, healthier lives and are more likely to stay independent at home.

Leslie Kernisan, MD, MPH, featured on the website Better Health While Aging, has developed a Healthy Aging Checklist to promote physical health among seniors.

Dr Kernisan said, “Remember, for the healthiest aging we need to do the things that optimize health and health care so that the brain and body work at their best for now and in the future.”

The Healthy Aging Checklist includes:

  • Promoting brain health and emotional well-being
  • Promoting physical health
  • Checking for and addressing common senior health issues (falls, pain, memory problems, depression, isolation, incontinence, polypharmacy, etc.)
  • Learning to optimize the management of chronic conditions
  • Getting recommended preventative health services for older adults
  • Addressing medical, legal, and financial advanced care planning

The brain-body connection does not fade as someone ages, which is why brain health and physical health are so critical to nurture now for a quality future.

7 Actions to Promote Physical Health

“(These) all have a solid track record (which cannot be said for everything I see recommended online). They are also good “bang-for-the-buck,” in part because they provide real benefits to just about everyone who adopts them. And they help whether or not an older person has already developed chronic illnesses,” Dr Kernisan explained.

  • Exercise regularly
  • Don’t smoke
  • Get enough sleep
  • Avoid chronic stress
  • Maintain a healthy weight
  • Eat a nutritious diet
  • Adjust your nutrition and microbiome

I’m sure these concepts are not foreign to you, and I suspect there are probably ways you can improve in several areas for better physical and mental health in order to live your best life.

Home Helpers® has many clients with physical and mental challenges who are homebound or unable to get out and about as easily. Some struggle with basic housekeeping tasks and preparing meals, for example. Others have health issues that impact their ambulation. That’s why the caregivers we employ are highly trained and skilled to deliver exceptional, compassionate, customized care and support 24/7/365, to help seniors be their best and live their best life at home!

I am happy to offer a FREE Assessment to discuss specific details about the in-home care services you or your senior loved one needs to improve their physical and mental health and well-being. After assessing needs, I customize a care plan and choose the perfect caregiver to make life easier, happier, and healthier for everyone!
