Do Something Grand for Grandparents Day, Sunday, September 12th

Aren’t grandparents truly GRAND! Grandparents are special for many reasons, but they have become even more so over the last year-and-a-half, as loved ones have not been able to spend time with them due to COVID.

Unfortunately, many people have lost their grandparents throughout the pandemic, and sadly, many were not afforded the opportunity to say goodbye.

With the Delta variant surge in cases, hospitalizations and deaths, I am not necessarily encouraging close visits with your grandparents or other special seniors in your life, but I am suggesting that we bridge generational gaps, connect and communicate with them. It is important to recognize their special day and Do Something Grand for Grandparents Day in 2021!

Generations United, a national membership organization, has a mission to connect children, youth, and older individuals through intergenerational strategies, programs, and public policies, and I think it is a wonderful mission.

Their website states, “Since 2012, Generations United has spearheaded an annual campaign to encourage all generations to Do Something Grand and engage with another generation on Grandparents Day. As our society opens back up, our theme this year is a question: How will you look at connecting generations differently this Grandparents Day?”

Generations United has suggestions for all of us as to how we can Do Something Grand this Grandparents Day.

Grandparents and Older Adults: We’re asking you to commit to Do Something Grand and share your wisdom, perspectives and key civic values with young people and advocate on their behalf.

Children, Youth, and Younger Adults: We’re asking you to commit to Do Something Grand and connect and serve with your grandparents or older adults in your community.

Grandfamilies: You provide a safe and loving home to your grandchildren or other relatives in your care. We think you are Doing Something Grand for children every day of the year. As part of our week-long celebration of Grandparents Day, Generations United recognizes, honors, and thanks grandfamilies. Want to talk to an expert on grandfamilies? Contact us

Intergenerational Programs: You are Doing Something Grand every time you bring younger and older people together. We’re asking you to plan and coordinate grand intergenerational activism projects.

“Together, adults and youth can reach out to decision-makers and begin one of the most important dialogues in our history: discussing how, as a country, we can address the many challenges facing future generations—from literacy to health and wellness to financial stability.”

Whether or not your grandparents are still with you, always try to Do Something Grand by connecting and communicating with the special seniors in your life on Grandparents Day and beyond. They have a lot to teach younger generations, and younger generations have a lot to learn from them!

I hope you will consider the Generation United call to action to Do Something Grand, and take the opportunity to learn more about their mission and available resources.
