As America’s Independence Day has come and gone, we feel confident saying that Americans appreciate the freedoms and liberties we have to live our lives the way we choose. In our business, though, the focus is on ways Home Helpers can deliver necessary support for senior independence, because seniors may not always have the benefit of making such choices.
A caregiver friend of ours in a neighboring state helps a 95-year-old lady with housework the woman can no longer manage herself. The senior woman has all of her faculties. She plays bridge with her Bridge Club, drives herself to the grocery and church, and prepares her own meals, but she has fallen a few times while living alone and has spent weeks in the hospital and rehabilitation before being allowed to return to her residence by herself.
The woman’s daughter lives in another state, and she is genuinely concerned about her elderly Mom. So much so, on her last visit, they discussed selling her house and moving her into an assisted living facility nearby, where she would have other people around to monitor her activities of daily living and assist as needed. The elderly Mom did not aspire to this suggestion, but she agreed to think about it.
Age may be just a number, but it can translate differently for each person depending upon their own personal journey, lifestyle choices, underlying health conditions, etc.
Damey and I have had the pleasure of knowing seniors like that 95-year-old who ate a healthy diet, led an active lifestyle, and saw their doctors routinely. We have also had the privilege of helping seniors who got little or no exercise, struggled to eat right and were taking multiple medications for numerous health issues.
Each senior is different regardless of their age, with varying degrees of need to maintain their independence at home.
In an article published by aPlaceforMom, writer Claire Samuels explains “As aging affects health, mobility, and memory, seniors may struggle to feel control over their everyday lives. But senior independence can help older adults maintain a sense of autonomy, even as circumstances change. Some markers of independence — such as driving safely and living alone — may not be possible past a certain age or physical condition. However, even basic decision-making and task-completion can offer a sense of accomplishment that boosts self-worth and well-being.”
