Once upon a time, it was Mom who made sure that you were eating healthy foods and looking out for your health. She kept a watchful eye on you to make sure that you had as much independence as you could manage, and as much support as you needed. She steadied you when you crossed a rough patch, whether figuratively or literally.
And when she couldn’t be there herself, she did whatever she could to make sure you had the support of trusted teachers, coaches and other qualified professionals.
When you think about it, that’s what all of our moms did. And if you were to ask most of them, they’d probably just tell you that the love of their families is the only gift they could ever ask for.
How do you thank someone who gave you everything?
There are shopping malls and websites and catalogs filled with mass-produced merchandise GUARANTEED! to be the PERFECT MOTHER’S DAY GIFT! We’re not suggesting that tokens of your affection aren’t welcome and even nurturing to mark special occasions.
But Mother’s Day – above all other holidays – is a great opportunity to put into words the love you silently show for each other all year long. To thank her and remind her that even when you tire, she’s never a burden to you just like you weren’t a burden to her.
In the DuPage suburbs near Chicago, Diane Borchers serves a family that provides just this example. Diane was a finalist this year for the Exceptional Caregiver Award, and when you watch just part of her story, we think you’ll understand why.
You can find the rest of Diane’s video and the stories of all our Exceptional Caregiver Award finalists here.
The best of Mother’s Days to all of us,
Bella
