Seniors Have a Delicious Quality of Life with Healthy Meal Planning and Preparation

Going to the grocery store is a painful experience for me and many others these days thanks to inflation like we haven’t seen in decades. I, for one, am shocked by the cost increases for everyday food items, many of which we need to properly fuel our bodies.

I am especially concerned about seniors right now because most are on a fixed income and are struggling to make ends meet as it is…or was. I’ve heard troubling stories from my caregivers about seniors who were concerned about how they would be able to pay for their medications due to the higher grocery expenses and vice versa. That’s frightening!

It is crucial that seniors consume a daily diet packed with nutrition for energy, a stronger immune system, and a healthier, more delicious quality of life.

Nutritional Guidelines for Seniors

My Plate, a platform of the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), has published an article that explains more about geriatric nutrition and specific guidelines to help seniors choose foods wisely and get the most out of mealtime!

  • Choose from a variety of foods in each food group to reduce your risk of developing chronic diseases like hypertension, diabetes, and heart disease. It is best to select foods with minimum levels or no added sugars, saturated fats, and sodium.
  • Consume protein throughout each day to maintain muscle mass and function.
  • Focus on foods with specific nutrients: potassium, calcium, vitamin D, dietary fiber, and vitamin B12.
  • Hydration is more important than ever as we age. Seniors should drink plenty of water, low-fat or fat-free milk, 100% juices, and soy beverages are also great options. Try to limit beverages with sugars or salt.
  • A healthy diet pattern can help reduce weight or prevent weight gain. Add some exercise to your lifestyle with nutritious foods and watch the results!
  • Keep food safe using the Clean, Separate, Cook, and Chill system. You can learn more at FoodSafety.gov.

There are more options than ever before in our grocery stores, so finding a nice variety of fruits, vegetables, leafy greens, nuts, proteins, and plant-based options is easier than ever! When preparing your grocery list, be sure to include your favorite produce and lean cuts of meat and fish, or vegan selections for a healthier diet.
