National Caregivers Day: Recognizing Those Providing In-Home Care for Seniors

Caregiving is a huge responsibility, and it is not for the faint of heart. Some people are naturally gifted with a heart for caregiving, while others struggle with the responsibility.

Choosing to be a caregiver requires a clear decision to put the needs of others ahead of your own. Someone’s quality of life is enhanced when a loving caregiver tends to their individual needs. With the aging population growing at record levels, as well as the costs associated with assisted living facilities and nursing homes, there is an increased need for caregivers to help seniors stay independent in their own homes.

In observance of National Caregivers Day, Friday, February 18, I would like to recognize the award-winning team of caregivers I employ and the in-home care services they humbly deliver to seniors every day.

My exceptional caregivers provide companion care to keep seniors company when they live alone, keep their minds engaged through conversation, games and activities, and keep them socially connected, as much as possible.

Caregivers manage homemaker services like laundry, light housework, grocery shopping and nutritional meal planning and preparation, which may be too difficult for seniors, especially if they suffer with arthritis, Alzheimer’s disease or dementia.

Alzheimer’s and dementia care helps ease the burden with customized home health services to ensure a higher quality of life and more peace of mind for you, your loved one, and your entire family.

Specialized care services may also include recuperative care, support for stroke recovery and post-operative care.

Additionally, many of my caregivers have experience helping clients with conditions like Parkinson’s, Down’s syndrome, COPD, and heart disease. To ensure the right care for you or your loved one, Home Helpers provides specialized training for our caregivers, which includes:

  • Alzheimer’s and Dementia Care through the National Certification Board for Alzheimer & Aging Care (NCBAC)
  • Parkinson’s Care
  • Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) Care
  • Intellectual Disability (ID)/ Developmental Disability (DD) Care

My caregivers provide 24/7 live-In and shift care for those who require overnight assistance, and we recommend Direct Link 24-hour monitoring devices in case of an emergency for seniors who live alone, which adds a level of comfort for their families.

In-home caregivers are an answer to transportation woes when age, illness or disability leads to “driving retirement.” Seniors can remain independent and do not have to forego running personal errands or worry about missing important doctor appointments due to transportation constraints. Caregivers are insured and will happily provide seniors with transportation assistance – whatever the need – promptly and safely each and every time.

Wellness calls by caregivers ensure seniors are faring well: they are eating, exercising, staying hydrated and taking their medications properly. Wellness calls may include:

  • Morning & Evening Check-in Calls
  • Meal Reminders
  • Hydration Reminders
  • Exercise Reminders
  • Medication Reminders
  • Companionship with Engagement and Conversation
