Everyday Should Be Senior Citizens Day in Wake of COVID-19

“For all they have achieved throughout life and for all they continue to accomplish, we owe older citizens our thanks and a heartfelt salute. We can best demonstrate our gratitude and esteem by making sure that our communities are good places in which to mature and grow older — places in which older people can participate to the fullest and can find the encouragement, acceptance, assistance, and services they need to continue to lead lives of independence and dignity.”~ President Ronald Reagan – August 19, 1988, Proclamation 584

Seniors in Clearwater, throughout Florida, and across our nation deserve to be celebrated on more than one day each year. In my opinion, everyday should be Senior Citizen Day in America, especially after the wrath they’ve suffered thanks to COVID-19.

National Senior Citizens Day is commemorated each year on August 21st. It was established by President Reagan more than 30 years ago, to remember, honor and celebrate our senior loved ones, friends and neighbors. Let’s face it, the older members of our population deserve much more than one day of celebration for all they have seen, learned, accomplished, and survived in their lifetimes, especially if that includes coronavirus!

Now, more than ever, it is of major importance that each of us reach out to the senior citizens in our lives on a regular basis to keep them socially engaged, which will undoubtedly lift their COVID-weary spirits. Did you know the Administration on Aging projects 28% of seniors over the age of 65 live alone, and that statistic nearly doubles for senior women over the age of 75, to a staggering 45%.

Seniors living alone in the age of coronavirus have a much higher risk of experiencing loneliness, depression and other health and safety issues, which should raise red flags and be observed as a major concern.

Spending time with seniors in your life offers you the opportunity to monitor their physical and mental health and well-being. If you can’t physically be with them, consider a FaceTime or Zoom gathering with other family members. If technology is not an option, call seniors on the phone. They will love to hear your voice and catch-up on your life.

Set aside some time to listen to seniors on Senior Citizens Day and in the days to come. Seniors have experienced so much in their lives, and the historical lessons they can share are first-hand accounts that allow us all to learn more about our history and our lives.

My caregivers and I believe everyday should be Senior Citizens Day, and we are devoted to offering kindness, compassion and respect 24/7/365, whenever called upon to assist with in-home care, wellness checks, transportation needs, homemaker services, Alzheimer’s & Dementia care, companionship, respite or personal care.
